Our Story

A Heritage of Freight Expertise

  • 1970s: The Foundation

In 1973, Technical Traffic Consultants (TTC) was founded by Robert and John Mecchella as a transportation consulting firm specializing in post-audit services. With a small, family-oriented team, the company quickly earned a reputation for recovering substantial overpaid freight charges. By 1974, TTC expanded its scope to include regulatory law, supported by two ICC practitioners. These formative years established the company’s foundation of precision, integrity, and industry expertise.

  • 1980s: A Strategic Shift

The early 1980s marked a turning point as TTC transitioned from post-audit to pre-audit and payment services, driven by the belief that a high-quality pre-audit could eliminate the need for post-audit altogether. By 1982, the company had fully committed to exclusive pre-audit operations. In 1984, TTC added an in-house transportation attorney to address the increasing complexity of logistics law, reinforcing its commitment to comprehensive, customized service. By the end of the decade, TTC had grown from a handful of clients to over a hundred, becoming a trusted partner in freight audit and payment.

  • 1990s: Building Infrastructure

The 1990s were a decade of expansion and modernization. In 1992, TTC formalized its logistics department, offering clients a wide range of support services—from claims filing and vendor charge-backs to routing guides and bid coordination. Anticipating the digital shift, the company began developing its own PC-based reporting software. In 1999, co-founder Robert Mecchella retired, and John Mecchella, alongside his wife, Nancy, assumed full ownership—ensuring continuity in leadership and reinforcing TTC’s commitment to family-driven values.

  • 2000s: Innovation and Transition

The 2000s ushered in a transformative era. In 2000, TTC launched its Small Parcel Audit and Payment process in response to the rise of e-commerce and the shift toward small package shipping. During this time, John and Nancy Mecchella’s daughter, Lauren, formally joined the company, stepping into a leadership role alongside her parents. Her arrival marked the beginning of a new generation of leadership, blending tradition with innovation.

Technologically, TTC transitioned its reporting software to a web-based platform, giving clients real-time access to data and customizable tools. The company also developed proprietary imaging software, integrated EDI billing with digital document retention, and deployed a Freight Processing System to automate business rules and rating mechanisms. These innovations supported paperless billing, improved audit precision, and enhanced operational efficiency.

  • 2010s: Data-Driven Growth

Throughout the 2010s, TTC continued to grow, while remaining committed to customized service. The company invested heavily in Information Technology, expanding its capabilities in data analytics and business intelligence. This included formalizing an analytics team and integrating closely with clients’ finance and accounting departments to deliver advanced financial logistics support such as costing models, landed cost calculations, freight accruals, and forecasting. These tools empowered clients with deeper insights and more efficient processes, reinforcing TTC’s reputation for precision and reliability.

  • 2020s: A New Chapter

The 2020s marked a new era of leadership and innovation. In 2022, after nearly five decades at the helm, John and Nancy Mecchella retired. Lauren retained her ownership shares and welcomed Jim Parker and David O’Quinn as partners. This new partnership brought over 30 years of experience in the freight bill audit and payment industry, with a focus and expertise in small parcel. Under this new leadership, TTC continues to uphold its founding principles of customization, integrity, and client-first service. The company has also expanded its parcel-focused offerings to include complete proactive Loss & Damage Claims services and complete Parcel RFP support -- solutions designed to enhance cost recovery and improve carrier accountability.

Now headquartered at Blue Hill Plaza in Pearl River, NY, TTC remains focused on optimizing efficiency and delivering tailored solutions. In 2024, the company began investing in closed-loop AI models to drive automation and precision across its network—enhancing speed and accuracy, while maintaining the high standards of quality that define its legacy.

Today, TTC serves a diverse portfolio of hundreds of clients, ranging from global shipping partners to small startups. This breadth reflects the company’s adaptability and its ability to deliver value across industries and scales.

TTC’s blend of strong audit principles, deep industry roots, and cutting-edge AI technology continues to set the company apart. As TTC moves forward, the company remains committed to adaptability, exceptional service, and purposeful partnerships.
